Project Description:
Start Somewhere’s pilot construction project – the construction of a school building for 400 children inside Kibera Slum, Nairobi was realized in 2020 during COVID-19 crisis. Planned and coordinated remotely from Germany and locally built by residents of Kibera under guidance of Start Somewhere’s local project manager Lazarus Asewe in time and budget.
The construction and running of the hollow concrete block factory as well as the school construction were funded as part of a pilot project by the Deutsche Investitions- und Ent-
Development Company mbH (DEG), a subsidiary of the KfW Bank, and by PERI, one of the largest manufacturers and suppliers of formwork and scaffolding systems.
Material: 7.600 SSW TwistBlocks, steel concrete, steel doors and windows, gypsum ceiling, trapezoidal sheet metal roof
Necessary workers: average 15 per day
